Krytox™ Performance Lubricants for Engines and Accessories

High Lubricity Means Smoother-Running Engines

Krytox™ performance lubricants deliver long life, stability, and resistance to fuel and fume exposure. Additionally, they increase the service life of critical engine components, allowing them to run quieter and last longer.

Properties that make Krytox™ oils and greases ideal for automotive engine and accessory applications include:

  • Wide temperature operating range, from -75 to >400 °C (-103 to >752 °F)
  • Low-temperature starting performance
  • Chemical resistance (will not break down in presence of harsh chemicals)
  • Safety (will not burn or support combustion, even in 100% liquid or gaseous oxygen)
  • Long lubricant life

Several key engines components can benefit from using Krytox™ oils and greases, including:

EGR Valves

Krytox™ lubricants can withstand the high temperatures and exhaust fumes experienced by exhaust gas recirculating (EGR) valves. EGR valves reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by recirculating some exhausted gas back into engine cylinders.

If the valve does not open enough, insufficient recirculation takes place and excess pollution is created. If, however, the valve sticks open, the temperature inside the cylinder can drop too much, decreasing engine performance and fuel mileage. Both problems can be eliminated with Krytox™ lubricants.

Viscous Fan Clutch

A thermostatically controlled fan clutch typically drives the cooling fan. The bearings that support the drive shaft for this clutch regularly experience high temperatures.

If these bearings wear and begin to fail, the cooling fan runs less efficiently. When this occurs, the engine can overheat, and any resistance in fan clutch rotation can drain valuable power from the engine’s drive shaft, further reducing overall performance.

Krytox™ lubricants have low volatility and a high viscosity index, providing long-life and excellent lubrication to the fan clutch bearing under these high-temperature conditions.

Alternator

The alternator is usually belt-driven by the engine, supplying electricity to basic automobile functions. As electricity is generated, the alternators—and hence the bearings—get very hot.

Standard lubricants volatilize in the alternator's extreme high-temperature environment, leading to alternator bearing failure. Today's higher output alternators generate tremendous heat, which demands the advanced, reliable performance and heat stability of Krytox™ lubricants.

Spark Plug Boots

Spark plug boots made of silicone rubber can bond with the silicone ceramic of the spark plug over time, causing the two to fuse together. If this occurs, the only way to remove the boot is by force, which could damage the assembly and require replacement. Krytox™ lubricants can prevent this fusion from taking place because they are stable, non-reactive, and long-lasting.

Lubricants Keep Accessories in Top Working Order

Krytox™ performance lubricants withstand rain, snow, extreme temperatures, and dirt to keep critical auto accessories working. Areas where Krytox™ greases and oils play a major role in keeping parts operating include:

Windshield Wiper Motors

A failing windshield wiper motor can be avoided by applying a small amount of Krytox™ lubricants on the bushings.

Exterior Side View Mirror Mechanism

The angle of the exterior side view mirror is adjusted using small plastic gears that can easily crack or break, even with minor binding. Krytox™ grease provides long-lasting lubrication, eliminating the need for regular maintenance, and ensuring continuous operation for a vehicle's lifetime.

Electronic Parking Brake Mechanism

Some vehicle manufacturers are replacing conventional mechanical parking brakes with electronic ones where a push button assisted by a small plastic gearbox engages the brake. Krytox™ lubricants can carry the gear load, will not evaporate or oxidize, and are compatible with almost all plastics.

Hinges and Latches

Krytox™ performance lubricants excel in their resistance to lubricant washout and tolerance to dirt for extended periods, while traditional lubricants simply can’t meet these performance demands.

Additionally, there are many automotive O-ring applications that benefit from Krytox™ lubricants.
